Why spend holidays overseas?

This question has been puzzling me for a very long time. Why has an overseas trip become a holiday ritual? Why can’t people just stay in their own country and spend their holidays without spending a whole lot of money? Why can’t people just relax at their home-sweet-homes instead of flying somewhere else?
I seriously wonder why.

But I think travelling is fun only when you don’t have so many holiday projects and work… :|
